Laurent Mayali a rédigé une thèse d’État en droit et a été habilité à diriger des recherches en histoire du droit.
Laurent Mayali a été professeur de droit de 1988 à 1996 à l'UC Berkeley School of Law. Il dirige depuis 1988 la collection Robbins (section droit civil et religieux). Il devient directeur du Comparative Legal Studies Program en 1995 et co-directeur de Korea Law Center en 2013. Il dirige le Miller Institute for Global Challenges and the Law de l'UC Berkeley de 2006 à 2009. En 1988, il est professeur dans le programme de 3e cycle Ancient History and Mediterranean Archeology, UC Berkeley. De 1992 à 2000, il est directeur du Advanced Law Degree Program, Berkeley Law et exerce toujours la fonction de président du Berkeley Law Exchange Programs and Visiting Scholar Committee. De 1993 à 1994, il préside le UC Berkeley Senate Committee on Library. Il devient membre du UC Berkeley Senate Committee on Educational Policy de 1991 à 1993 et du Berkeley Law Curriculum Committee de 1991 à 1992.
Il est également professeur invité dans les Universités de Bordeaux III (1991), Paris II (1992), École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris, (1997), Toulouse (1998), Montpellier (2000), Seoul National University (2014, 2016).
